Chapter 12

Dangling Temptations

Brychan & Rathlin: Solstice

Outside of Eynon, Warwick stared sadly at the line of Foresters’ graves on the slope above the sea. That deadly searing sheet of Power had taken them all by surprise – if this was what they could expect when coming up against the Helm, then it did not bode well for the future. Although the regular Order men had also taken serious casualties from the fighting, this almost felt worse for the reason that they had been caught so utterly off guard.

“Stop beating yourself up,” Berengar said softly, appearing by his side. “You couldn’t possibly have known! Even at Moytirra the DeÁine didn’t have the Treasures with them, did they? The last time any Islanders fought against those fell creations was five centuries ago! In that time we managed to forget how to use our own Treasures, so it’s certainly not down to you that we’re unprepared for the ways these cursed Abend weapons might manifest themselves. If there was complacency over the danger, then it took its toll long before any of us were born.”

“Indeed,” Brego agreed, joining them. “It’s what Sioncaet said back at Lorne. It’s the difference between us seeing those days as in the far past of our ancestors, yet for Quintillean it was in the days of his youth. There never was any doubt in my mind that when it came to playing this particular game of catch-up that the Abend would win hands down. The big question was only when and where this blow would fall, and for my part I’m very glad that it happened when the Abend were so far away and the strength diluted. You may have lost two companies worth, and have equivalent to another two who now won’t come with us to Rathlin, but it could have been worse. Much, much worse!

“What if we’d discovered what the Helm could do in the first charge against the new DeÁine? What carnage might have ensued then with their superior numbers? So spend your time instead thinking about ways to reflect that thing, or something to deflect it from us for when we encounter it again. I’m not asking for the impossible, because I know that you can’t counter that kind of strength and simply blast it back at them. Just try to find some way to send it flying off into the skies, or down into the earth.”

Warwick nodded weakly, then took a deep breath and straightened his shoulders. “Sorry. ...I always knew we might pay a high price for ridding ourselves of the DeÁine. I suppose I’d allowed myself to think that it wouldn’t be just yet – not in this fight – once we knew the Abend weren’t with the Donns.”

“We all did,” Berengar said regretfully, and looked beyond to where the graves lay of some seven hundred of his men. It was too many when viewed as men he had come to recognise individually, whatever his mind said to the contrary and given that they had annihilated the ten thousand facing them.
